CERT-In Apple Security Update: Patch iPhones and Macs

CERT-In rated its Apple security update advisory High. See which iPhone, iPad and Mac versions are affected and how a small business should patch them.

CERT-In Apple Security Update: Patch iPhones and Macs

Updated: 31 October 2026

CERT-In, India's national cyber security agency, has issued a High severity advisory on multiple vulnerabilities in Apple products, and the fix is to install Apple's latest security updates. If your team uses iPhones, iPads, Macs or the Safari browser, check that every device is on a patched version this week.

The advisory is numbered CIAD-2026-0056 and was first issued on 27 October 2026. It does not say whether any of the flaws are being actively exploited, so treat it as a prompt to update promptly, not as a reason to panic.

What did CERT-In say about Apple products?

The advisory is titled "Multiple Vulnerabilities in Apple Products" and carries a High severity rating. CERT-In says the flaws could let an attacker execute arbitrary code, escalate privileges, disclose sensitive information, bypass security restrictions or cause a denial of service.

The issues are described as memory corruption, out-of-bounds read and write, use-after-free, buffer overflow, race conditions, type confusion, integer overflow, and improper input validation or authorization problems. They sit in components including WebKit, the kernel and media-processing frameworks. The advisory says an attack could come through maliciously crafted web content, files, images, audio, video or fonts.

A roundup published by The 420 on 30 October also lists this advisory among the day's cyber stories and repeats the advice to install the latest compatible security updates.

Which Apple versions are affected?

Per the advisory, devices running anything older than the versions below are affected. Check Settings or About This Mac on each device and compare.

The advisory also lists a very long set of CVE identifiers, which is common for bundled vendor updates. You do not need to read each one; matching your device version to the list above is enough to know whether you are covered.

  • Safari: versions before 27.2.
  • macOS: Sequoia before 15.8.2, Tahoe before 26.7.2, and Golden Gate before 27.2, as listed by CERT-In.
  • iPhone and iPad (iOS and iPadOS): before 18.7.11, before 26.7.2, or before 27.2, depending on the release line your device is on.
  • Other Apple software: watchOS, tvOS and visionOS before 27.2.

Why should a small business care about an Apple advisory?

Many Indian business owners run their day on an iPhone: WhatsApp Business, UPI apps, bank apps, email and customer calls. Designers, developers and accountants often work on Macs. A flaw that can be triggered by a web page or a file sent to a phone or laptop is a risk to client data and to business accounts.

CERT-In's wording is general, so no one can say from the advisory alone how likely an attack is against your business. What the advisory does make clear is the severity and the single recommended fix, which costs little: update.

If you manage a team, make it a written rule rather than a request. Ask staff who use their own phones for work to send you a screenshot of the Software Update screen, and keep a short list of who is on which version. This takes ten minutes and gives you a clear answer if a client or auditor later asks how you keep devices secure.

How do I update my team's Apple devices?

CERT-In's recommended action is to apply the appropriate updates as mentioned by the vendor, and it links to Apple's security notes. A simple routine for a small team looks like this.

Allow some time for the download, since a large update can take a while on a slow connection. Doing it on office Wi-Fi in the evening, with the phone plugged in, avoids interrupted installs and keeps working hours free.

  • List the devices. Note every iPhone, iPad and Mac used for work, including personal phones that open office email or WhatsApp Business.
  • Open the update screen. On iPhone or iPad go to Settings, General, Software Update. On a Mac open System Settings, General, Software Update. Update Safari if it is listed separately.
  • Install the newest version offered for each device, and restart when asked. Back up important files first.
  • Check the version afterwards and compare it with the list above, so nobody is left on an old build.
  • Keep automatic updates on so the next security fix does not wait for someone to remember.

What if a device cannot be updated?

Older Apple devices may not be offered the newest release. The advisory lists patched versions on several release lines, including 18.7.11 for iPhone and iPad and 15.8.2 for macOS Sequoia, so check whether your device can install the fix for its own line. If a device truly cannot reach a patched version, avoid using it for banking, client data and admin logins, and plan to replace it.

Apple's own security notes, linked from the CERT-In advisory, list the exact fixes and supported devices. Read them before you decide a device is out of support.

The takeaway is simple: CERT-In rates the Apple flaws High, the fix is already available from Apple, and updating every iPhone, iPad and Mac used for work takes a few minutes. Do it today, and turn on automatic updates so the next advisory is a non-event.
